From City to Sea

Let us tell you something about California. You can travel only 1 hour by car however, the temperature can change 20 degrees. This is something nor Michelle and Isabella knew so a word of advice would be pack more of what you think not!

Probably one of the most exciting parts of our entire California visit would be the time spent by the ocean. Ed knew of a spot just off the road where if you walked far enough you would get to cliffs that were right above the water. If lucky, you can see a wide variety of sea life all the way from crabs, mussels and sea urchins to seals, dolphins and whales. We would say we got more than lucky because not only did we see one whale, we saw a whole family of them and they sure were happy because every five minutes the youngest would follow its mother in dive showing off it’s fluke! And of course we saw all the other sea life that was mentions but it wasn’t quite as exciting.

Here you can catch a glimpse of what we saw. Seals bathing on the hard, mossy rocks close to shore. Followed only a short distance by the baby whale showing it’s fluke before heading under the water completely.

Here you can see the progression of our little whale friend diving under the water!

Although most who visit this remarkable spot will stay up on the cliff, there is a passageway for sea divers and others to walk down towards the water. It is definately a slow trek down, for you don’t want to fall on the rocks, but once you make it you will be able to feel the cool breeze on your face and the smell of salt water more clearly than before. As well as the temperature being one feature that changes rather quickly as you change location in this state, the landscape and surrounds change too. One moment you can be in the middle of a dark, foggy forest but only a few mile away you can be standing on the shore of the Pacific Ocean.

IMG_3167.jpgDown by the water you will be able to see pools of crab and beautiful, purple sea urchins (you can pick them up but be careful if you do because they are prickly – they won’t hurt you though) and rows of hundreds of mussels. This, is really much more incredible than it may sound. This is often the forgoten sealife, and the one we tend to eat, however it is still just as beautiful as a whale and better yet, you get to be right next to it!

Lastely, this place by the sea is a wonderful place to spend time with your family. Here, you can experience these wonders together and make wonderful memories that you will cherish forever. This place is different from the beach in Florida because it’s a sancuary. It’s home to the animals of course, but also a safe place for you, to spend a few moments connecting with yourself and the world around you. IMG_3248.jpgIMG_3322.jpg

“There’s nothing wrong with enjoying looking at the surface of the ocean itself, except that when you finally sea what goes on underwater, you realize that you’ve been missing the whole point of the ocean.” – Dave Barry
